When I saw this piece in an issue of Fine Woodworking magaizine I was immediately attracted to the design and thought this is what’s missing in our bathroom. The origianl design was in another wood species and I chose to make it out of walnut to better match our existing trim and cabinets. Fast forward and when I was close to completing the piece (sans door) I temporarily hung the cabinet in the bathroom. It just looked all wrong; it was too big for the intended space. So this sat in my workshop for several months before I figured out what to do with it. As you can see in the pictures it now hangs in our home office and serves to display my small mineral collection. One detail that stands out to me is the shiplapped back. I was able to resaw a piece of walnut that resulted in wonderful book-matched patterns. This cabinet looks great in its new space and serves as a lesson learned. I liked the design so much, I immediately started the build without really looking at the bathroom space I had in mind. Also if I knew ahead of time that I was going to use it to display small objects I would have definitely added at least one more shelf. So even though the original intent did not come to fruition, all’s well that ends well.
